People bond over food and cars at fast food car shows across the nation. Basil Kazepis, who founded the Westchester Cars and Coffee over ten years ago, explains how strong communities are formed through fast food car shows. Producer, Kaylee Jenson, explores how fast food and cars have brought her family together.

Reflective Statement

In the remediation my goal was to give tangible examples of how my argument functions in the real world. To fit the smaller scope of this project, I decided to narrow my original argument and focus specifically on how cars and food form communities at fast food car shows. This is important to my original argument because it is this sense of community that makes people comfortable and vulnerable enough to perform their identities at fast food car shows.

To demonstrate my argument I decided to focus on two case studies. The first case study was the Westchester Cars and Coffee. I chose to document this event because of its longevity and location. Because the car show has been going for ten years, many of the participants are lifelong friends. This strong friendship perfectly exemplifies community. The location is interesting because it takes place at a local bakery. Although the bakery is not a traditional fast food restaurant, it is still considered fast food. It is considered fast food because of the quick-paced and line-style service and its cheap prices. This bakery is a perfect symbol for community because it is such a centric and important part of Peekskill.

I chose to share my own story because it demonstrates my argument on a smaller familial scale. Communities come in all sizes, so I think it is important to show the audience how my argument functions at different sizes. I also think that my story is interesting because it is intergenerational. This exemplifies another interesting aspect of my argument by showing how cars and food can unify younger and older people. Although my story revolved heavily around the Chevy, it is important to note that the main reason why my family is modifying the car is so we can take it to fast food car shows.
